How Should a Flat Cap Fit? A Simple Guide to Getting It Right

Choosing the right flat cap is not only about the style or the fabric. One of the most important factors is how the cap fits.

A well-fitting flat cap should feel comfortable, balanced and natural to wear. When the fit is right, the cap becomes part of your overall look rather than something that feels awkward or out of place.

Many people assume that sizing a cap is complicated, but in reality it is quite straightforward once you understand how the cap should sit on the head.

Where Should a Flat Cap Sit?

A traditional flat cap should sit comfortably across the forehead, usually just above the eyebrows.

The back of the cap should sit slightly lower on the head, allowing the crown to follow the natural shape of the skull.

The brim should angle slightly downward at the front. This creates the classic silhouette associated with traditional British caps.

If the cap sits too high on the head it can look unbalanced. If it sits too low it may press against the ears and feel uncomfortable.

The goal is a natural, relaxed fit that stays in place without feeling tight.

Should a Flat Cap Be Tight or Loose?

A flat cap should be secure but not tight.

You should be able to wear the cap comfortably for extended periods without feeling pressure around the forehead.

Signs the cap may be too tight include:

  • a visible mark across the forehead after wearing it

  • pressure around the temples

  • the cap slowly pushing upward on the head

Signs the cap may be too loose include:

  • the cap moving easily when you turn your head

  • the cap lifting in light wind

  • the cap slipping forward over the eyes

A well-fitted cap should remain in place naturally without needing adjustment.

How to Measure Your Head for a Flat Cap

The easiest way to find your correct size is to measure the circumference of your head.

Use a flexible tape measure and place it around the head just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead. This is where the cap will normally sit.

Measure in centimetres and then compare the measurement with the size chart for the cap.

Most of our caps are available in sizes ranging from approximately 55cm to 63cm, though in some styles we extend this range to fit 53cm up to a 65cm.

The Difference Between a Flat Cap and a Newsboy Cap

Although they are often grouped together, flat caps and newsboy caps fit slightly differently.

A flat cap has a slimmer profile and sits closer to the head. It tends to follow the natural shape of the skull and creates a neat, understated silhouette.

A newsboy cap, sometimes known as a baker boy or eight-panel cap, has a fuller crown and a slightly looser appearance.

Both styles should still feel secure and comfortable, but the overall shape of the cap will differ.

Choosing the Right Style for Your Face

Different cap shapes suit different face shapes.

For example:

  • Flat caps tend to suit most face shapes because of their slim profile.

  • Newsboy caps can add volume and balance to narrower faces.

  • Structured caps work particularly well with coats and tailored clothing.

Ultimately the best choice is the one that feels natural to wear and complements the rest of your clothing.

Why Fit Matters

A well-fitted cap should never feel like a costume or accessory that draws too much attention.

Instead it should simply become part of your everyday clothing.

When the fit is right, the cap will:

  • sit naturally on the head

  • maintain its shape

  • remain comfortable throughout the day

This is why traditional caps have remained popular for well over a century.

They are simple, practical and timeless.
