How to Measure Your Hat Size: A Simple Guide

Traditional tools like the conformiter have a special place in the art of hat-making. These fascinating, vintage instruments, which we proudly display  in our showroom, were originally designed to capture the exact shape and size of a person’s head. By adjusting a series of pins, the conformiter maps every curve and contour, ensuring a hat that fits like a glove.

While these tools are a marvel of craftsmanship and history, the good news is you don’t need one to measure your head at home! It’s quick and straightforward:

Finding the perfect hat size doesn’t have to be a guessing game. At Gamble & Gunn, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to choose a hat that fits perfectly and looks great. Whether you’re new to hats or just need a quick refresher, this guide will walk you through the steps to measure your head accurately and choose the right size.

We offer one of the UK’s largest ranges of cap sizes, spanning from 53cm to 65cm. With such a wide selection, we ensure that every customer can find a cap that fits perfectly, blending comfort, style, and exceptional quality.

Step 1: How to Measure Your Head

  1. Grab a Measuring Tool:
    • Use a cloth measuring tape for the best results. If you don’t have one, a piece of ribbon or string will work just fine.
  2. Find the Right Spot:
    • Place the tape just above your ears and circle it around your head. Keep it snug and positioned at the center of your forehead, exactly where you’d like your hat to sit.
  3. Keep It Comfortable:
    • The tape should feel snug but not tight. Remember, a hat should feel comfortable when worn for long periods.
  4. Double-Check Your Measurement:
    • To ensure accuracy, take the measurement a couple of times. Standing in front of a mirror can help you position the tape correctly.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Size

Once you have your head measurement, it’s time to determine your size. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • If your measurement falls between two sizes, we generally recommend going up to the next size. A slightly looser hat can often feel more comfortable, but ultimately, this is a personal preference.
  • Consider how you like to wear your hats—some people prefer a snug fit, while others enjoy a more relaxed style.

Step 3: Understanding Sizing Charts

At Gamble & Gunn, we use centimeters (CM) as the default sizing for our hats. If you’re used to imperial sizing, you can easily convert using the chart on our Size Guide page.

UK vs. US Imperial Sizing:

One area that can cause confusion is the slight difference between UK and US imperial sizes. To avoid any mix-ups, simply refer to our comprehensive size chart. This ensures you’ll find the perfect fit, whether you’re shopping locally or internationally.

Why Accurate Sizing Matters

A well-fitted hat doesn’t just look better—it feels better too. Wearing the right size ensures your hat stays comfortably in place without being too tight or too loose. Plus, it helps preserve the shape and integrity of the hat over time.
